In 1960s and 70s, the Keep Going! film franchise was a British institution. The producer of the films, Eric Peters, was a titan of British humour, and created a multi-million-pound empire. Beloved and adored by the young and old for its saucy and silly slapstick humour, it was seen as a part of the British personality. However, the death of Eric Peters in 1980 was the beginning of the end for Keep Going!
His son, Eric Peters Jnr, took over the film franchise at just 20 years old. It was clear the youngster didn’t know what he was doing. What followed were “the death years”, a phrase coined at the time by film critic, Hilliary Buzzard. Eric Jnr, in a desperate attempt to stay current, made the films more alternative and unashamedly rude. He made some truly awful films, that were criticised for being offensive and demeaning. Keep Going! finished production in 1989 with, Keep Going Soho! The film was a total failure, and what remained of the original cast left the franchise. The actors received a small sympathy fee, but it wasn’t enough, everything was sour. The company declared bankruptcy the following year, and so it ended.
Or so it would seem. Eric has decided to use what remains of his father’s legacy and wealth to bring the franchise back to life. Keep Going Gen Z! is to become the 16th film, soon to be released next year. Eric, keen not to make the same mistakes, has invited new up and coming comedians, like lead actor, Jake Collins, in a bid to breathe some new life into the franchise. Keen to keep the oldies happy, Eric has also cast original Keep Going! stars like, Barbara Jones. Eric hopes tonight’s press night will convince the public that Keep Going! still has some legs! But rifts are forming between the old order and the new way. The actors are bickering, and Eric is beginning to lose control of his idea. Old scandals are coming to light, and new ones are appearing.
Will the franchise rise from the ashes, or are the films and all their stars just a load of has beens?
